Call for Essential Mass Volunteers

Friends and St. Paul’s Parishioners,

We need your help! One of the things that has been made abundantly clear as we proceed to the great moment of inviting people back into the church for public Mass is the call for a large and committed corps of volunteers.  Without this help, it must be emphasized, we cannot have public Masses.

And so, we are reaching out to you.  We are most in need of people to serve as ushers at Mass (before, during and after), and to a crew of people who will clean the church and bathrooms after every Mass.  By state ordinance and the protocols of the church, without these supports, we cannot have Mass.

I would ask you to consider taking up one of these roles.  Ideally, if you could commit to a particular Mass each week, that would be a great service.  If we have enough volunteers, we can rotate weeks. (Obviously, those who are in any of the “risk categories” should not volunteer.)

For cleaning, we will provide all the products.  Pews will be wiped down after Mass, as well as any common touch surfaces in the church and in the bathrooms.  It should not take more than 20 minutes.

Ushers will guide people into the church who are wearing masks and have a completed reservation form (others will be asked not to enter.)  Ushers will guide parishioners to open spots in the pews, and at communion time they will help facilitate the flow of communicants and those seeking a blessing.  At the end of Mass, ushers will indicate to each row when they can exit and help people not to congregate in the aisle or vestibule.

We are also seeking help for lectors and Eucharistic Ministers (who are already trained here at St. Paul’s for these roles.)  Let Nancy know and she will be in touch with you as the needs arise.

If you can help, I would ask that you contact Nancy at nnicol@stpaulparish.org or at 617. 491.8400 as soon as possible, no later than Wednesday evening, May 27. Please indicate to Nancy:

  • which role you would like to fulfill…usher or cleaner (or say “available for both”)
  • which Mass you prefer
  • if you are available each week for the foreseeable future

For cleaners and ushers, we will have a training (pick one time) on Thursday, May 28 at 1:30pm and at 7:00.  It will last one hour.   At that time, we will also be looking for coordinators for each team.

Those who will be serving any of these roles will also be invited to attend Holy Mass on Friday, May 29 at 12:10pm in the church, which will allow for a “soft opening” of Mass and a trial run of procedures.

These are good days ahead, and it will take all of us to make this re-opening reverent and safe. Thank you for your consideration.

Fr. Kelly
