Music Director, Master of the Choristers

An internationally known organist, vocalist and music director, Mr. Kennerley is rooted in the English choir school tradition, having sung as a chorister under Graham Elliott and Barry Rose at Chelmsford Cathedral. He later served as Organ Scholar at Jesus College, Cambridge, and at Saint Paul’s Cathedral, London. Most recently he served as Music Director at three influential Episcopal churches in the United States. Additionally, he has provided professional leadership as Dean of the New York City Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and as Director of the New Jersey State Children’s Chorus.
James Kennerley has frequently given solo organ concerts throughout the U.S. and Europe. As a composer, he has enjoyed a particularly fruitful period in the last few years. His setting of Adam lay ybounden sold hundreds of copies internationally since its first performance in 2016. His hymn arrangements for choir, brass, and organ have been performed in the U.S., Australia, and the United Kingdom, and his upper voices Evening Canticles, composed in 2013 for the Choir of Ely Cathedral, are now in the repertory of choirs in the U.K.
Assistant Music Director

Born and raised in the UK, Maks began his choral and organ training as a Chorister at the London Oratory School under Stephen Grahl, Lee Ward, and Nicholas O’Neill. He continued his studies as an organist at the Royal College of Music Junior Department and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, London, under Ann Elise Smoot and Daniel Moult.
He went up to Oxford in 2012 to read for a BA in Music. Following Graduation, he undertook research into the Laude Spirituale of 13th century Italy as part of a Master of Studies degree in Musicology.
A prize-winning Associate of the Royal College of Organists, Maks has held organ scholarships at the Old Royal Naval Chapel in Greenwich, Oriel College, Oxford, and Lichfield Cathedral. Most recently he spent a short time as Organ Scholar of Liverpool Anglican Cathedral and interim-Organist of St Peter’s Church, Streatham Hill in London. As a Choral Director, Maks has worked as Director of Chapel Music at St John’s College, Oxford, and spent five years as Master of Music at Pusey House, Oxford.
He has been the Assistant Director of Music of St Paul’s Church since May 2019. He is responsible for the running of the Chorus track at the Choir School, the instruction of the Junior Choristers, and directing the St Paul’s Parish Choir. Additionally, he accompanies all Choral Liturgies that take place in the Church.
